- (continued from previous page)It is the custom in my district for a general bonfire to be held at a cross-roads, on the night of the twenty-third of June, St. John’s Night, or, as it is commonly called, Bonfire Night.For a few days before, children can be seen dragging with them as much as they can carry of whins, bits of branches and other necessary material for the fire.On the great night the children wind their way towards the spot, their merry talk and laughter making an echo among the hills. After them come the old men and some old women all chatting gravely.When the heap of firing material has been reached one of the old women, for whom the honour of lighting the fire has been reserved sets a match to the heap.About the same time little flickers of flame begin to appear on the horizon and as they blaze up we can name the townlands in which they are situated.
