- In the olden days, when most of the country, even the boglands, was under wood, Finn Mc Cool and his companions made periodic hunting incursions into Donegal, especially south Donegal. It is said that Finn knew every inch of territory from Lough Derg (of the pilgrimage) to Glencolumkille. It is also said that he knew from the taste of the venison in what particular wood or district in this region the deer had been killed.
Finn and his companions went to Glencolmcille and Teelin on a hunting expedition, and incidentally, to seek and select recruits for the Fianna. They killed many deer on this expedition. From there they journeyed to the Glenties district where they remained for a month. Then they set their course toward the south east for the woodlands around Lough Derg.
In Barnes Gap a fine deer was sighted and hounds and men gave eager chase. The hills echoed for a whole day to the clan own and shouting of the Fianna and the laying of the Rounds. The latter, baffled at every turn, hid, in their despair, ‘the rocks that yelled again’ the chase was(continues on next page)- Collector
