- Some people are very superstitious and they had lots of things which acted as weather prophets.
It is said that it is a sign of bad weather to see the cat sitting with her back to the fire.
Other signs of bad weather are:
A red sky at sunrise
To see wild geese fly inland.
If there is a golden ring round the moon.
"A far-off ring is the sign of a near-hand storm"
When the sheep come down from the mountain (Muckish) and stay about the foot of it, there is sure to be a storm.
When the ducks stand around and lay their head on their backs and quack loudly. This is a sure sign of bad weather
Or when the hills seem to be very near
When midges & flies fly low, or when hens droop their tails, or ducks gather together or the pigs squeal for no apparent reason.
To see a blue glow in the soil of a log on a misty evening is a sure sign of very bad weather.
To see a crane or heron go up along a stream, or to see one flying around.(continues on next page)
