grass never grows. Tradition says this is where he fell- the large hole is where his head touched the ground, and the others mark of drops of blood which fell from it. I have been informed that time and time again these holes have been filled with sods of grass, but that they withered almost immediately and never took root. - Shipwrecks in Lough Swilly :-
The Frigate Saldanha was wrecked on Swillly Rock on a tempestuous night in December 1811 and all on board (400 persons) were drowned. One man swam ashore near Portsalon but died next day . Some of the bodies including that of Captain Packenham , were recovered and interred in the precincts of the old monastic ruins in Rathmullan.
The event is commemorated in doggerel which possesses no merit whatever :-
Come all you gallant seamen bold who to the sea belong
Give ear unto my tragedy, I will not keep you long
It is of the Talbot Sloop of War and the Saldanha also
On the first day of December they both to sea did go.
