belonging to him was caught in a drain and was unable to extract herself. Thomas himself rescued her from the drain unaided. It is said that he lifted her out of it while some of his neighbours were hastening to his aid.
John Marley Gortlough who lived about two miles from this School on the road to Rathmullen was able to break between his hands a newly-made horse shoe. A fleet-footed man still alive resides in the townland of Gortcally about 1 1/2 mile to the West of this School. His name is Denis Deeney and his age is about sixty-six years. He once ran from Goodwin's Hotel Ramelton to the Police Barrack Rathmullen an exact distance of 6 1/2 miles in 45 minutes and he also wore his shoes during the race. Three other competitors took part in this race but they were completely outdistanced by Deeney notwithstanding the fact that they were barefoot during the race.
