“In the Penal days the Irish priests and monks had to say their Masses in fields ...”
In the Penal days the Irish priests and monks had to say their Masses in fields and woods unknown to the soldiers and robbers.
One day a priest and his followers was saying Mass in the Abbey wood in the townland of Drumboe. The priest asked his followers for a match to light a candle, but the had none. He broke a branch of a tree near by, and stuck it on a rock. Immediately the branch lit; also the water began to flow from the rock and it formed a holy well which is in the Abbey wood to the present day.- Collector
