are sprayed two or three times to prevent blite and left to ripen.
About the month of October they are dug out of the ground. In olden times they were dug with spades, but now a potato digger is used. It is drawn by two horses. It knocks out the potatoes, and they are gathered and put into pits. A pit is a pile of potatoes with rushes over that. There is a trench dug round the pit, and the clay is put over the rushes.
The various kinds of potatoes grown in this district are Kerr's Pinks. Arran banners, Suttons, Epicures, Arran Pilots, Arran victors, and a new kind called Royal Kidneys, but Pinks and Suttons grow best in this district.
