- Houses in olden times were quite different from what they are now.
The floors were made of clay, the fire place was an open hearth on the floor with a wide brace with a box or a barrel on the top in place of a chimney.
The roofs were thatched with straw and sometimes with rushes or flax.
They had roset candles for light and sometimes a slut was used for holding the candle.- Collector
