- Bread
Long ago bread was made from wheat corn and Indian meal. There were no flour mills in this district. Milk and water were both used for baking every day.
They marked a cross on the bread this cross was put on for luck. The thing they baked the bread in was called a girdle or oven pot sometimes often bread was baked in front of the fire.
They baked a special kind of bread for Halloweve and Christmas. The often bread was made from often meal, milk, salt and water. Potato bread was made from bruised potatoes, We now call it fadge.- Collector
