It had been held every year prior to that from time immemorial.
When an animal is sold a half-crown is always given back to the buyer. This is called a "luckpenny". "To sell a beast" at the end of the "halter" means that you give the buyer no guarantee that the animal is good or healthy. "Never buy a pig in a poke" is an expression which means do not make a bargain without knowing what you are getting for your money. "Never sell your hen on a rainy day." This means:- do not sell things when they are cheapest. When a buyer gets his "luckpenny" he spits on it and puts it in his pocket.
When a bargain is made the parties show agreement by slapping their hands together.
When an animal is sold it is marked by clipping the hair off near its tail. Sometimes a dealer clips his initials on the beast. Other people mark them with "keel" stuff like paint which the dealer has in a tube.
