- Long ago the Irish were noted for their learning. Since the death of Saint Patrick until the Danish invasion Ireland was called the "Island of Saints and Scolars". All through the country there were numerous monasteries and in these fountains of knowledge people from foreign countries received their education. Many missionaries from Ireland sojourned all through the continent of Europe teaching and preaching and as they went they spread the faith and education in those dark ages. This was Irelands golden age. But there came a time when Ireland was denied of her education. They defied the law and attended hedge schools.
