- Money lenders
Auctions and moneylenders caused much poverty here and many evictions. At a fair a man auctioned a cow say - now the buyer had no money to pay for it, so he borrowed the price of her from a money-lender on a promise to pay her at rate of so much in £. During the fair-day that buyer auctioned the cow again at a higher price than he paid for her. With the money he did not pay the money-lender back at once but bought some other things he needed with it and so in that way he raised a bit of money.
Many a time the same fair-day that same cow was auctioned eight or more times.- Informant
