- In olden times there was no soap to wash with only what was made at home. Mother used to tell me that when she was young grandma made all the soap to wash their clothes. They killed a cow or a pig. The fat was melted and put into a pot with a quantity of water. When that was boiled there was resin put in and caustic soda along with borax. That was all boiled for half an hour. Then it was poured out into a tube for twenty four hours. It was then cut out in pounds and put out in the sun to dry.(continues on next page)
