- (continued from previous page)Many years ago the most advanced and most fashionable form of transport was riding on horse-back for men with their women folk seated on pillions. The pillion was a cushion or upholstered seat fixed to the saddle and there was no more exhilirating sight, than to see these riders going to fairs, markets and weddings.
In case of weddings all the guests on horse-back used to accompany the Bride and Bridegroom to the church, often times a distance of nine or ten miles. It must have been a pretty sight for 'tis said not only the women, but the men (wore) were gaily decked.- Collector
