  1. (continued from previous page)
    That I cannot understand
But I only ask of Grace
    To practice what I preach.
    Though monstrous March
With age's hair getting silvery gray
With a cold and bitter blast
He swept around the Hill that day
To show his great majestic power
    His voice with fury wield
He exiled a little violet flower
    When but a child.
But March is gone like Jerboams
Like Garibaldi or Absulom of old
    Who had a wicked reign
Who left no Grace about his place
    Nor violets to remain
But I hope his great successor
    In prudence will abide
And have a bunch of violets blue
To decorate young May his bride.
Until my hand it gets not power
    And mountains leaves their place
I'll praise the little violet flower
And I'll pray every day for Grace
The "sunscorched Hill" = Bishop Hill
"just but for an hour" = the young girl Violet
