    that the land was under a spell. The grass seemed to be as good as ever and the cattle were very healthy. Yet the cows gave no milk. The people did not know what was wrong. Prayers were said, and charms sung, but it was all in vain. The cows still gave no milk, and the famine lasted a full year.
    One evening a farmer was returning home after a journey. He was very tired, and he leant against a tree for a few minutes. Then he saw a little man coming up towards him. He thought it was a herd boy, but it was not. It was an old man smaller than the smallest herd boy he had ever seen. Never before had the farmer seen anything like this.
