    When Lord Lucan was Land-Lord, over Brockagh, Aughowla, and Cultrain, all the people had to live on Cortoon and Derrynaknock. At that time too, the people had to live in little huts made of sods. Later down they began to make houses of stone, and mortar. In those house there were no chimneys but the fire was at the gable, and there was a cleeve in a hole in the roof over it, to let the smoke up. The houses then were roofed with straw, or rushes.
