- Long ago, when there were no lamps or candles, the people made torches out of rushes out of the bogs.
A very common practice was to say the Rosary around the burning torch. Each person in the family would have a torch. Each person would put a burning torch in a sod of turf, and put his name in front of it. Then they would say the Rosary around it, and whatever torch would burn out first, that person was supposed to die the first.- Collector
