- There are three or four forges in the parish. There is a forge in the village of the Crossroads. It is a very big forge with one fireplace. There is a large iron sitting on a block of wood and he uses this for battering the iron on. This is called an anvil. He has a tub of water for cooling the red iron in. He sent away for the bellows and he has them in this long time. He is able to make harrows, ploughs, cultivators and grubbers. He mends socks for ploughs, especially drilling socks. He points harrow pins and coulters also the smith shoes cart wheels outside on a large stone which he has for the purpose.
The water in which he cools the irons can cure warts.
If the smith had turf to draw home his customers would all draw home the turf free.- Collector
