- Up to about ten years ago people used not get married until shrove-tide.The last Sunday of shrove is called "Chalk Sunday" because on that day all people who are not married are marked with chalk.Long (it) ago it was a custom to make pancakes on the last Tuesday of Shrove and that day was called "Pancake Tuesday".An old custom is when the bride is entering the house of her husband after getting married her mother-in-law would break an oaten cake on her head.It was a custom long ago that the bride should be carried across the threshold by her bridesmaid after the wedding. It was a custom also to throw a bottle of water on the doorstep before the bride would enter.
