    and those who were not able to pay them were evicted. By degrees the people grew tired of this and they began forming secret societies.
    This Daly was a leader of one of those societies in his own parish where a cruel landlord ruled. The landlord’s name was Burke. One day as the landlord was coming out of his own avenue he was fired upon by some unknown person but he was not hit. After the shooting Daly was arrested tried and found guilty. After sentence of death being passed upon him he was asked had he anything to say why he would not be hung. In reply he said he had nothing to do with the shooting and he said if it was he who fired the shot, Burke - the landlord would not be present to swear falsely against him.
    When Daly was in his cell some of the landlords came to him and told him they would let him free if he told them the names of the people he doubted were in the shooting. The answer he made was:-
