- There are three forges in this district. One is in my own village of Brooklawn. William Costello owns it. It is beside a public road which is about twenty yards from a crossroads.
The smith is able to mend ploughs, harrows, gates, and tyres of cart wheels. He usually works in the forge but when he is putting on tyres he works outside where he makes big fires to redden the irons.
The most work he does is making horse shoes and ass shoes and he puts them on. He is often employed in winter time mending ploughs. His forge has a wooden roof there is but one fire place in it. He always burns coal in the fires. The bellows is beside it. Nobody can make a bellows in this parish.
The tools which he uses are hammers, pincers, files, rasps, a knife, sledges, and augers.
