- About twenty-six years ago a terrible burning took place in this native town of mine. I being but a young girl of eleven years do not remember it, but last (l) night my father related the whole story to me. I will now describe it as fully as I can.One night a work-man was repairing a car in the garage now owned by Mr. O'Shaughnessy. Electricity was not in Gort at that time, so a candle was one of the chief ways of showing light. This man had a candle light in and some way or other the candle fell, where petrol had been spilt. The place went up in a blaze, and the man rushed to give the alarm. There was no fire brigade in the town, so the police arranged a line of men from the garage down to the river which flows near by. Buckets were procured, filled at the river, and passed along from man to man and then the water was thrown on the blaze. This was the only means of extinguishing the flames. After a long time the blaze was got under control. There was damage done to the building, but there were no(continues on next page)
