- The original was printed in block letters and this accounts for the Capital letters inserted here and there by the child. This poem was composed by a boy named Martin Walsh. He lived outside the town near the Electric power house. He died last November aged 21 years. R.I.P.
He was a labourer's son.1.
O Gort your name was once far famed,
But that was in days of Yore,
Gort Inse Guarie you were named,
You were Connaught to the core.2.
it does not matter who you are,
Nor from whence or where you came,
So best if you came from afar,
In Gort you will fame.
You are quite safe to walk the streets,
I mean you are not in Danger,
With smiling faces you will meet,
For Gort is the Home of the Stranger3.
