She said that her husband, John, appeared to her last night at twelve o'clock and asked her for ten pounds that he owed to a man and that he could not go to heaven until he paid it. "Oh," said the priest, "be sure to give it to him." At the same time he went to the guards and told them to watch for the ghost. They came to the house and hid in the press. John came again at twelve o'clock that night. He knocked at the window again and told Nancy to let him in. She opened the door and he walked in. He was bare-footed and dressed in a shroud. She handed him the money. He said, "God bless you. I can pay the man now and go to heaven." He asked to see the children. He kissed each of them and then turned to go.
