One shot, however, from a modern cannon would shatter the stoutest of towers that we see, at different points along the Shannon today.About forty years ago a man named Waller, a Galway County Magistrate and his daughter lost their lives by drowning just opposite Keelogue. Waller's boat overturned and in trying to save his daughter he perished himself.
- About a mile and a half west of Banagher Bridge between Shannon Grove on the one side and Ballymacolohan on the other stands the small island of Inchanaclaha. It lies rather low and in the Winter time when the Shannon is in flood, it is nothing unusual to see it disappear from view. In the Summer or early Autumn it would be difficult to find a cooler or more refreshing place than Inchanaclaha. Water-hens, bald coots and other aqueous birds frequent it's verdant tall bullrushes, while a plentiful supply of prodigious drowning bases and water liliacrate bind a romantic air(continues on next page)
