- January 6th, 1839 just 100 years ago was the Night of the Big Wind. It was very rough and every man was out saving his possessions from the fury of the storm. Man Fannon's house in Kilbeg was cracked. John Keavney's house in Cloonlea was also damaged. The large stones that was on the tops of the hills of Ballybane were blown many miles away. The galvanise roof was blown off Ann Glynn's outhouse and a young calf was killed. The new chapel at Williamstown was blown down.
On that night Bridget McDermott was born in Islands. She was ever afterwards known as "Brighdín na Gaoithe"- Collector
