When they would reach the town the man and girl would go into the church to be married and they would have a spanner each. When they would be going to the town the man and the girl would not be coming home they would sit beside each other. They used to say that it was not right to have a mare that would be in foal under the ear and it wasn't lucky to meet another marriage or to see a corpse in the church. Sometimes when the people would be going to the church they would go on horse-back and when they would be coming home they would be racing to see who would be the first at the man's house and the first one would get a can of porter. When the wedding would be coming the people would have bonfires made on the side of the road and lighted sods of turf steeped in oil. When they would reach the house there would be great joy on everybody. Then they would get down off the ears and the married couple would kneel down at the door and the girl's mother-in-law would break an oaten meal cake on the girl's head and if it(continues on next page)
