- Long ago when people wanted to shoe a horse they had to bring their own turf and iron. Then Mr. O'Loughlin who was the local smith made the nails and the shoes.
He put twenty four nails on every set of shoes. The smith charged a half-penny for the first nail he put on and a farthing more for the second nail and so on rising a farthing for every extra nail so that a set of shoes cost seven shillings and two pence half penny.- Collector
