  2. Vessels

    The vessels used before cups became common were called "Noggins." These were round wooden vessels about the size of a porringer with the handle fixed on like that on a tub now. When a person died the people said on hearing of his death "there is a noggin and a spoon for another."
    Very little vegetables were eaten except green cabbage which was regarded as a Sunday dish.
