- In olden times most people made their own candles. These candles were made from the inside part of long rushes. One crowd of people would peel the rushes and another party would melt lard. These rushes would be left in the oil of the lard for about three days. Then they would be left seasoning for another while. One candle would last for about an hour constantly burning. The people made little wooden holders with a little hole in the middle for the candles. Two or three little candles would be left burning together.
