  1. In the townland of Greaghnafarna, Parish of Killinummery, Co. Leitrim, there was an old school in Michael Kelly's land. It was the neighbours that build it of sods and clay, and there were no seats in it, only black-oak sticks left up on stones along the walls. The master's name was Quinn, and he was blind in one eye. There were about fifty or sixty scholars going to this school, and there were no steel pens at that time, only pens made from quills. It was the children's parents that used to pay the teacher because he was getting no yearly salary. He taught the children no subject but reading, writing, and arithmetic. He was very cross with the scholars, and especially with the boys. There is still some his scholars in the district and their names are John Mostyn and Jimmie Keegan, both of Greaghnafarna, Parish of Killinummery Co. Leitrim.
