- Before Drummer Dye was known of, people made their own dyes.
They gathered the moss and lichens off the stones, boiled them for a few hours and then dipped their cloth or whatever they had to dye in it as it gave a brown colour.
Another way was to gather the whin blossom boil them for about three hours and dip and boil the article that wanted to be dyed in the mixture. It would make a bright yellow dye. In both cases the dyed garment was afterwards dried in the outdoor air.- Informant
