- Hedge schoolsLong ago there were no schools like now. The name of the schools long ago were Hedge schools. There was a Hedge school at Kilclare and another at Annahearly. The master who taught in Kilclare Hedge school was Master Meehan and the master who taught in Annahearly Hedge school was Master Taylor. The payment that the teachers got long ago was that every child in the school had to bring a penny every Monday it was called the penny Monday school. The kind of seats the children had in the Hedge schools long ago were two big lumps of wood and a board from one piece of wood to the other and when the children were writing they had to put their books on the board and sit on one of the pieces of wood They had also big long stools. They had very few books long ago and the name of the books was Reading Made Easy. The sort of pens the children used were long quills(continues on next page)
