- In Kilconnell on the great west road from Dublin to Galway seven miles west of Ballinasloe its lofty tower is a familiar landmark above the wide plain. It was founded by Liam O' Cheallaigh in 1353 and restored and enlarged in 1460 in the reign of Mallaheachlainn O' Cheallaigh. The princely O'Kellys of the west were always generous benefactors of Kilconnell Abbey.
Wandering through the ruins of to-day we will note the beautifully-decorated windows. The chruch, nave, choir, side aisle, the south transept and also some of the cloisters are still well preserved and you will see five specimens of carving and architectural achievement and the variety of the mason marks on(continues on next page)- Collector
