“There once was two men and one of them was rich and the other man was poor.”
There was once two men and one of them was rich and the other man was poor. The poor man had only one cow and she died so he brought her skin to the market and sold it for seven and six pence. On his way a magpie lay on it and the man caught her. He cut a bit of the skin and put it round her and when he got the money he put some of it in along with her. He went into a public house and asked for a drink and when he got it he gave a shake to the magpie and two pence fell out. "What is that you have" said the shopkeeper. It is an enchanted bird that will lay money for me when I want it said the man. "I will give you £20 for her if she lays two pence more", so the man shook her again and two pence fell out. Then the shopkeeper gave him the £20 and he went home. That night the other man came into his house and asked him what he got for the skin and he said he got £20 for it.
