    was insufficient to meet the needs of the people, Indian meal in small quantities was divided among the poorest, and I believe, for I heard my father say it, that some of the worst sufferers got no relief, while those who had the apportioning of it kept some of it for themselves and their friends.
    Yes, great numbers of people died of various diseases brought about by hunger. Many of them were buried without coffins, and some had to be buried almost where they died, as their friends were so weak from want of food they were unable to bring them to the grave-yard for interment.
