- When General Blake's army were travelling through this district on their way to Ballinamuck, they were joined by many of the Catholics who wished to take part in the fight against the British.
After the defeat at Ballinamuck many of them who escaped with their lives, were met on the return journey and killed by their protestant neighbours.
They were buried where they fell and some kind friends had flowers planted on the graves in the shape of a cross or coffin to mark their burial place.
These flowers still grow and bloom. One of these graves is to be seen on the bank of the Canal below Aughoo and another on Aughawillian Hill.- Collector
