- Long ago the people had no ropes such as we have now,they had to use hay ropes which they made themselves.
They'd gather some long fresh hay,and a twister,or a piece of a stick, and twist it around the stick.
Then the rope was twisted until it became strong,and firm and one half was twisted around the other part, and then it was fit for use.
The single rope was used especially for putting on cocks of hay and are still used in that way yet.
Then the double rope was used for tying on cart loads of hay , and for other uses also.
