  1. A Song (continued)

My name is Paddy Sheehan my age is thirty four.

    (continued from previous page)
Bereft of home and kith and kin and plenty all around.
I starved within my cabin and I slept upon the ground
But cruel as my lot was then, no hardship did I know.
Until I joined the English army far away from Aherlow.
Rise up there said the corporal you lazy Irish hound.
Did you not hear the call to arms sound
Alas I had been dreaming of days gone long ago.
    I woke before (sep) Sepastrobool
    But not in Aherlow
    O Blessed Virgin Mary
    Mine is a mournful tale
A poor blind prisoner here I am
    In Dublin's dreary jail.
    Struck blind within the trenches
Where I never feared a foe
And now I ne'er shall see again
    My own dear Aherlow.
