- Hedge schools were the only means for obtaining an education for our fore-fathers when our state was down trodden to English tyranny.During those periods it was a usual thing to see as many as from fifteen to twenty schools in a parish.In secluded and remote places such as backs of ditches and under large bushes the teacher taught his pupils. In my own district I have often traversed over the foundations of those hedge schools.I was told that a hedge school existed in the townland of Fearnaught, Dromod. The school existed in a cave.
