- Food in olden times
In olden times the people used to eat potatoes and meat, the flesh of the calf and wild animals. The calves were worth nothing in the market and the people used to kill them and eat them. The people used to get a basket of potatoes on the floor and sit round in a ring and then get a saucer of melted butter and dip the potatoes in the butter. They used to eat only twice a day in the winter, breakfast and supper. If people got a cup of tea they thought it a great luxury. At first they did not know how to use the tea and they used to boil the tea and throw off the tea and eat the tea leaves. They had "noggins" instead of cups and these were wooden. They had tables that they used to hang up against the wall and there are some of them to be seen still. The people used to make oaten bread on a grid-iron.
