    by a beacon fire which the French lighted on it on their way to Ballinamuck.
    The widow's brothers disposed of the farm stock in a hurry and at a sacrifice. It comprised sixty young horses and hundreds of cattle. This was said to be the first great uplift the Croftons of Lakefield got as they purchased practically all this immense stock.
    It is said that this man brought the first of the Colreavys into the district from some place in Roscommon. Colreavy is a very common name in the parish of Gortletteragh especially in the Southern end of it.
    The Northern end of the townland of Lear was called until quite recently Lear (Laidhear) Duignan, and the Southern end Lear Gunshenan.
