Fifth Standard. - Local Marriage Customs.There are many old long standing marriage customs still observed in the parish of Mohill. The matchmaking comes first when the intended bridegroom and some special friends call to the home of the bride-to-be, to ask her parents' consent to the marriage. Sometimes there is a bit of bargain-making regarding her fortune or dowry. The intended groom is not to fit the ring on the bride, or one of them will not have a long life.
