- (continued from previous page)(VI)O where is the hero that would me regain
The groves of Killeshandra and the boys of Dromlane
If the valiant Will Draper my sad case he knew,
He'd sent Humes to damnation and O'Reily rescue.
(VII)The boys of Drumlane now have cause to mourn,
For the loss of their hero who will never return,
The lakes are stagnated, the fountains congeal (pron. Congale)
Since valiant O'Reilly was laid in Drumlane
(VIII)The groves of Killeshandra no more will grow green
Nor the warbling thrushes no more will they sing,
Nor the trout in Cloughoughter no more will they spawn
Since the downfall of Reilly called Paddy Shan Bawn.
NOTES ON PADDY SHAN BAWN1) Some hold that Paddy did not belong to the '98 period but to the period after the Williamite Wars. Some even assert that he belonged to the Cromwellian period. The camp on Corriga Hill was on the spot now occupied by the house of Laurence McDonald. And, by the way, Humes was Laurence Humes. A certain family in Carrigallen is said to be the descendants of Humes, and whether this is so or not, they always resent any reference to Humes. Of course Humes' moral reputation was very bad.
