- IndustriesIn olden days many and varied were the Industries which were carried out around this district, such as, candles, soap, salt, baskets, spades lime etc.About twenty years ago Mr Buckley used to make lime in a kiln below in the sandhills. This lime was made from stones which he quarried below in the strand and drew them up with a cart and horse. Then he broke the stones very small and put every second lare of stones and turf until the kiln was full. Then he sat fire to the turf and left it so for a couple of days.After a couple of days he extracted the lime from the bottom of the kiln and sold it around the district.Baskets were made by Thomas Scanlon in Ahafona. First he brought in a sod of grass and a hundred of scollops and stuck some of them on the sod. Then he knitted the rest of the scollops in and out through the ones standing in the sod until it comes to the top.Then he got the rim or hoop(continues on next page)
