- Potato CropEvery body who has a garden a garden grows potatoes. We have about 60 drills of potatoes at home. My father himself prepares the ground. If it is new ground or what is called ban. We cover it over with seaweed early in Spring. The potatoes are sown in ridges in this new ground. The ridges are made with a plough. If the garden is small a spade is used and the man is said to be turning two pairs. Locally called turning "twooes". To make ridges with a plough two scribes turned one way and two more turned the other way. To make ridges with a spade the ground is marked out with a rope and then the man cuts along the rope with a spade sometimes it is two feet ten and more times three feet. The early potatoes are set in the beginning of February. The seed is about the size of a hen(continues on next page)
