    Employment was given to the people of this district by the English at the time of the famine. They gave a little money and flour. The year after the famine the people gathered all the potatoes they could get and set them in a different place. The year after they dug the potatoes and had a great crop.
    Long ago the people in the time of the famine died near the hedges and the sides of the roads. Some of these people died with hunger and cold and others with disease. There are not any ruins of old houses that were there long ago during the famine. The names of the people who died during the famine are John Nolan and William McCarthy who lived in Lixnaw.
