(continued from previous page)shoe and said he would not allow it to be put on hi horse. The smith insisted that the shoe was good enough and Shawn taking it in his hand pointed out the defects. Still the blacksmith was reluctant to make another shoe, and Shawn taking it between his hands bent it straight or rather I should say straightened it out saying 'how you will have to remake it.'
Shawn always wore an overcoat even on the finest weather. He came into the forge one day, as as the smith was heating an iron at the fire, Shawn took hold of the anvil by its beak and with one hand held it behind his back under his overcoat. When the smith turned round to strike the iron on the anvil he found to his astonishment there was no anvil. He was looking round the forge for his anvil when Shawn took it from under his coat and laid it on the block. This anvil was of the usual heavy type used in blacksmiths' forges
