    passed the people were found in heaps by the roadside. The people were afraid to go near them and the bodies of the dead began to rot. From this the cholera arose. Then the people began to pick the penny-winkles in earnest. Three or four families went into a tunnel together. Other families went into their houses and bolted their doors and laid down to die together.
